“Camilla Birkeland’s photographic work Rift are large scale photograms constructed totally from sticky tape. The transformation of this banal material is achieved through the modelling of sculptural objects and their reinterpretation through photographic processes. Light shines through the translucent sticky tape and it at once reveals its form and structure, significant in Birkeland’s efforts to pierce the skin of photographic reality. The photographic paper receives the photogram ’negative’ and is further ‘sculpted’ by selective lighting to create an image and an object that suggests icy caverns, Norway is her homeland, or chilly dark chasms in space and time, where objects fall eternally.”
